Wow today was a blast! I hope you saw the ClassDojo photos we snapped of the Run For Fund. I was so busy having so much fun spraying the kids with water and cheering them on that I only took before and after photos. Right before the event I told the students I would pledge a dollar for the top boy and top girl for each lap they ran and everyone blew my mind! Students ran almost the whole time! The top boy ran 50 laps with several boys coming in right behind him and the top girl ran 37 laps! Just to give you some insight, 32 laps was equivalent to 2 miles so don't be surprised if you have some tired kiddos tonight. :)
The pledge forms for the Fund Run is due October 6th. The prizes will be on October 12th. Tonight in your Thursday folders you'll find some important login information for Illuminate. Please log into Illuminate to see your child's progress in classes as we should be mostly caught up now. Thank you for your patience. If you have any questions or concerns regarding your child's grades or accessing Illuminate, please reach out to myself or the other teachers your child may have for other academic subjects. Conferences will look slightly different this year but Mrs. Verni-Lau will communicate more information to you regarding this matter. More to come next week.

Today's Thursday folders were packed with assessments and information for you to review. Please contact your child's ELA and math teachers if you have any questions. Some teachers just got access to Illuminate although it was up and running a while ago so please continue to give grace.
There is no school on Monday, September 26th - next week. Students will complete their last day of their first unit in science on Tuesday of next week and the first day of their Social Studies class with Mrs. Gravley will start on Wednesday. :) You may have seen the Dojo picture of our 4th graders paired up with first graders to read and find nouns in text. The first grade teacher, Mrs. Gichuru, and I are working hard to make our Reading Buddy experience an educationally exciting one. Our September birthday celebration is coming up next Friday from 3:05-3:20. Please see the Birthday Sign Up. Bike/Walk to School event has grown to service two new locations (the two new locations are only for bikers due to the distance). If students have music recorders at home, they should bring them into school so they can use them in music. We do have some recorders to share but they are shared so it limits the opportunity for students to practice and get their ribbons - a big deal in 4th grade. Snacks were donated earlier this school year and we will soon run out so please ensure your child has a snack next week since we won't be able to provide one. We typically don't provide snack because it not only takes too long to pass out but we also have a variety of dietary restrictions for various reasons and can't provide everyone with what they need/want. Lastly, your children and I have been reading The Invention of Hugo Cabret and loving it. Feel free to ask your kiddo what happened in the story today - it's a great book and I heard the movie was good too. It's finally here! Illuminate is up and running! However, we have 5 weeks of grades to enter so please allow grace. Picture day was this Wednesday but retakes are available if your child was sick or squinting (it was a fun photo shoot taken outside this year) on Thursday, October 13th. A permission slip went home last week asking for your permission for students to use their own headphones and bring in eReaders for DEAR days. I'll be contacting some of you who left questions on the slips or haven't turned them in yet. The headphones are nice to have, especially the small ones (earbuds), so students can carry them to math and ELA to use during their computer station. Both headphones and eReaders are up to the student to be responsible for and use responsibly. Only a few students in my homeroom have brought their recorder to school. All 4th graders need to have their recorders and leave them at school for music class. Mrs. Davis found them for less than $5 available at Guitar Center in Denver. The style you're looking for is a Aulos Three Piece Soprano Recorder. I was supposed to put the letter in Thursday folders but I forgot so it's below. Happy almost Friday!
This week in your Thursday folders you'll find a small sheet of paper to give your child permission to use headphones and tablets as well as permission for me to give other parents your email. Please return this as soon as possible. If you've already completed this during Back to School Night - no worries, we just wanted to try again to reach those who didn't fill one out or who wasn't able to make it to Back to School Night. The headphones can be either left in the backpack or I can hold on to them in a ziploc bag with their name on it. They use headphones in groups in math and ELA classes. Students can bring tablets or phones with an eReader app such as Kindle to use on Thursday and Friday during DEAR. They should be kept turned off in their backpacks during any other time and it is at the students risk. Some of you may have already heard but Senora Jayson and some middle school students are traveling to Costa Rica this year! They are raising their own money and one way they are doing that is through a raffle as well as the first Friday of the month dress down days. The raffle will end soon but the deadline has been extended until Tuesday. Students can win some awesome prizes and tickets are only $1! If they buy 5, they get one free! Please consider supporting this amazing opportunity! Don't forget to meet Mr. VanNorden and others tomorrow and every Friday for Bike/Walk to School. Check out his website or the website link to the right for more information. Next week we will have i-Ready testing in ELA on Monday and picture day on the 14th at 11:00am. In support of the Broncos and the football kickoff season, students may choose to wear Broncos gear tomorrow! Our Denver Broncos will be playing the Carolina Panthers tomorrow at Sports Authority at Mile High.
Students may wear their Bronco attire with school uniform pants, shorts, capris or skirts. Shirts also may be orange and blue to represent the Broncos' colors. No other teams may be worn. GOOOOOO Broncos!!!!! Also, tomorrow's math classes will consist of the math i-Ready test for all fourth graders. Please ensure your student has a good night's rest as well as a hearty breakfast and early start in the morning. Hey families! Thank you so very much for coming out to Back to School Night and to support the Book Fair. Remember we have one more day of the book fair before it goes away! If you missed Back to School Night please check the Thursday folder which will contain a flyer with important 4th grade information including the schedule. Feel free to email if you have any questions.
Tomorrow is the first dress down day for students who paid $1. The money will go to Highline students who are traveling to Costa Rica this year with Senora Jayson. Tomorrow night is also the first Date Night for Highline Parents! This money will also be used for students going to Costa Rica. If you missed the August 31st deadline, no worries, it's coming around again. For those of you who are going remember it's from 5-8pm tomorrow night (September 2nd) at Highline. Contact Senora Jayson ([email protected]) if you have any questions. SNACKS: Please don't feel the need to bring in snacks for students. Are snacks are only 10 minutes and take place while we work on science or social studies so it's easier if students bring their own snacks. Birthdays: Please remember to sign up for your child's birthday month using the SignUp Genius page so that I know what to prepare for and all parents are aware of what is already spoken for. If you do bring snacks, please drop them off to the teacher directly or the front office with you child's name on it so they can be delivered to the appropriate room. Thank you for all your support as we enter this new school year together. I'm looking forward to working with you and getting to know your child better. |
